What prompted us to write Endocrinology?

May 22, 2020 by Dr. Arpan Bhattacharyya

A small note to tell you what prompted us to make this website. A young executive after consulting for her thyroid asked “Anyway doc, what is your relation with criminals, why are you called Endocriminologist?”

It goes without saying the colour of her face after she was explained it is Endocrinology and there is nothing as Endocriminology neither we have any connection with criminals!

The Endocrine System

Endocrinology is the branch of the medical science what deals with hormones.

Hormones play a big role in normal and abnormal life of ours. Diabetes and Thyroid are commoner problems. Pituitary is the master gland which controls all the glands. Other common glands are Adrenal, Testes, Ovaries, Parathyroid, etc. We have made this website for common people to raise the awareness about different hormonal disorders.

Hormones has a diurnal rhythm, also sometime we need to get dynamic tests meaning we stimulate or suppress particular gland. There are different protocols are there for each gland.

Most of the time we do not prefer random test where you spend money but we do not get the information we need.

A general a suggestion will be to see specialist and plan for your test rather than running a panel of test most of which may not have clinical meaning.

Why me?

There is no specific reason, it is better to understand which hormone you have a problem, why this happened, what are the consequences and what sort of treatments are available. No need to feel guilty, you have not done anything wrong to alter your hormones.

Fortunately, emergency problems in Endocrinology are less (although less but emergencies are real emergencies like Diabetic ketoacidosis, Hypocalcaemic crisis or acute Adrenal insufficiency, etc.), so most of the cases a good initial discussion, counselling helps.
