About Sushruta

Sushruta Diabetes and Endocrinology Research Trust was formed on our personal interest to make people aware of different problems in the field of Diabetes and Endocrinology. Sushruta was a great physician well ahead of his time, we have named our trust in his name.

Sushruta was an ancient Indian physician known as the main author of the Suśruta-saṃhitā). The Mahabharata, an ancient Indian epic text, represents him as a son of Vishvamitra. He is one of a number of individuals described as the “Father of Surgery” and “Father of Plastic Surgery“.

The Sushruta Samhita is one of the most important surviving ancient book on medicine and is considered a foundational text of Ayurveda. This addresses all aspects of general medicine, but most on Surgery particularly plastic Surgery, so he was called  “the father of surgery”.

The Suśruta-saṃhitā has descriptions of 1,120 illnesses, 700 medicinal plants, preparations from mineral and animal sources. The book discusses surgical techniques of operation, extraction of foreign bodies, cauterizationtooth extraction, methods of draining abscess, hydrocele and ascitic fluidremoval of the prostate glandurethral stricture dilatation, vesicolithotomy, hernia surgerycaesarian sectionmanagement of haemorrhoidsfistulaelaparotomy and management of intestinal obstructionperforated intestines.

It narrated principles of fracture management, viz., traction, manipulation and stabilization including some measures of rehabilitation and fitting of prosthetic. It gives a classification of eye diseases including cataract surgery. Diabetes was also described here as Madhumeha.
